Campaigns directed at the European Parliament

The European Parliament is now rightly seen as an important law making and policy shaping forum in relation to many issues which deeply concern individual European citizens and particularly my constituents in Yorkshire and the Humber region. The European Parliament's competences include matters such as the environment, civil liberties, employment and social affairs; the Parliament also has a strong voice on many issues of international significance. This means that as a Member of the European Parliament, I receive a lot of correspondence from both residents of Yorkshire and the Humber region and citizens from across Europe and beyond, alerting me to matters which mean a lot to them.

Sometimes this correspondence is an individual letter from a constituent with a particular problem. At other times the correspondence is part of a mass email campaign often generated by an NGO, but of course I recognise that every e-mail takes individual thought and action and consequently deserves my careful consideration. I try to answer all of these emails and communicate with my constituents as much as possible. In order to demonstrate the type of issues that are directed towards MEPs on behalf of their constituents or other concerned European citizens, I will be publishing the content of some of these letters ( and the number of particular letters received, but absolutely no individual names, where they are part of a generic campaign, and with proper regard to any data protection issues ). It is my hope that this exercise will give people a better idea of the work of the European Parliament and also be informative as to my position and views on certain matters.
