The local Liberal Democrat Euro MP, Diana Wallis visited Dewsbury recently. As well as meeting people in the open-market, she visited a house in the town to see how improved loft insulation can help to cut down energy bills, a move which is seen as a key part of the Liberal Democrats recently announced plans to put 'Britain on a Green Road out of the Recession'.

Diana Wallis MEP, a Vice-President of the European Parliament, said:

"Instead of the meaningless VAT cut introduced by Gordon Brown that people have hardly noticed, Liberal Democrats want to see practical, green measures to get Britain out of recession.

"For example, laying your loft with 25cm thick insulation can dramatically cut heating bills. Across Kirklees, the free loft and cavity wall insulation scheme (Kirklees Warm Zone) introduced by the Liberal Democrats when running the council, should cut household bills and reduce CO2 emissions for home heating by 20-30% or more.

"Liberal Democrats will insulate every school and hospital in the country and the homes of a million people languishing in fuel poverty. These are the sort of practical, green measures which will help get Britain out of recession. "

Ends.

Notes:

The Liberal Democrats Green Road out of the Recession proposals include:

• A five-year programme to insulate every school and hospital, with 20% completed in the first year

• Funding insulation and energy efficiency for a million homes, with a £1,000 subsidy for a million more

• Building 40,000 extra zero-carbon social houses

• Buying 700 new train carriages

• Reopening old railway lines and stations, opening new ones, electrifying the Great Western and Midland mainlines and beginning the Liverpool light rail network

• Installing energy and money saving smart meters in every home within five years
