Diana Wallis said at the event at Redbrick Mills, Bradford Road, that it was important to recognise the contribution of people like Rex who first joined the Liberal Party in 1948.
"The history of the Liberal Democrats and its predecessor parties is a long one. It has not always been fashionable over the past 60 years to be a Liberal, but people like Rex and others carried on the fight through some dark days, so that now we are beginning to reap the dividend of such dedication to the liberal cause. Our thanks must go to Rex and his wife Betty for their tireless and unselfish efforts over all these years. Whilst Rex will continue to play a big part in the future, it is also up to younger generations to continue the campaigning."
