Diana Wallis - Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for Yorkshire and the Humber

Region's Lib Dem Euro MP votes to support calls for European Union leaders to open entry talks with Turkey.

2.08.17pm GMT Wed 15th Dec 2004

The region's Liberal Democrat MEP, Diana Wallis, this afternoon voted in favour of a non-binding resolution supporting the start of accession negotiations with Turkey "without undue delay" when EU leaders meet in Brussels this week. The resolution was backed by 407 MEPs, with 262 against.

Ms Wallis said after the vote, "This vote doesn't yet mean membership for Turkey. It will take time of course, but I think we will now be able to start the process of negotiations with Turkey which has made huge efforts to come and join the European Union.

"We need to keep a close eye on Turkey's progress in improving human rights, women's rights and religious freedom. The resolution said talks should be suspended at any time if Turkey starts to row-back in these areas, but Turkey has come a long way on these issues in a short period of time and I expect progress to be further accelerated over the next few years."

Ends.
