Lib Dem Euro-MP Gives Full Backing to new Yorkshire & Humber Region Office in Brussels
12.00.00am GMT Tue 6th Feb 2001
Diana Wallis, Lib Dem Euro-MP for Yorkshire and the Humber, has given her full backing to a new office opening in Brussels today to lobby for the Yorkshire & Humber region in the European Union.
Attending the opening, which included guests invited from across the region, as well as British EU Commissioner Neil Kinnock, Diana Wallis said:
"The opening of this office is a real boost to the Yorkshire and Humber Region. As well as having seven MEPs fighting for a better deal for the region, we now have a form of local government representation here in Brussels.
"I hope the office will help make sure Yorkshire and the Humber Region gets the best out of being part of the European Union."
In November last year, Diana Wallis welcomed to Brussels a contingent of Liberal Democrat Councillors from local authorities across the Region on a fact-finding trip to the European Parliament.
"As Liberal Democrats we are already acting on a region-wide basis," continued Diana Wallis MEP. "The group of Lib Dem councillors and campaigners represented Local Authorities from the East Riding and Hull, to North Yorkshire and Kirklees. The opening of this office will help facilitate further regionally based working practices in the future."
